Visual illusion that may help explain consciousness

We assume our visual consciousness gives a detailed picture of the scene in front of us; but, peripheral vision is strongly limited by the deleterious influence of crowding. Our visual system does OK identifying objects in our peripheral vision, but when those objects are placed near other objects, it struggles.
