A Good, a Bad, and an Evil Character: Who Renders a Novel Most Enjoyable?

Writers strive to capture readers’ attention, elicit intense engagement & leave a lasting impact. In fiction, a bad character renders a narrative more suspenseful than a good character does - people enjoy immoral actions of characters. However, pushing badness to an extreme level (e.g. an Evil Character) erases rather than enhances advantageous effects.
